"House Ethics Panel Says DeLay Tried to Trade Favor for a Vote"

Bush was so horrible in the debate tonight that I was beside myself. Karl Rove must have been raving. Regardless of what the press says tomorrow morning, I think JK had a solid performance.

However, let's not let ourselves get swept away by the theatrics. There's more important news this evening. In an article entitled "House Ethics Panel Says DeLay Tried to Trade Favor for a Vote," the NY Times reports that...

The House ethics committee admonished Representative Tom DeLay, the majority leader, on Thursday night for improperly trying to win the vote of a Michigan lawmaker last year during a heated floor fight over a health bill.

The panel said it found that Mr. DeLay, a Texas Republican, offered to endorse the son of Representative Nick Smith, a Republican, in a Congressional primary race in exchange for Mr. Smith's vote for the measure to add prescription drug coverage to Medicare.

"The investigative subcommittee concluded that it is improper for a member to offer or link support for the personal interests of another member as part of quid pro quo to achieve a legislative goal," said the findings, which the committee said were based on sworn testimony from 17 members of the House.

Sure, it's no indictment but I take it as a sign that DeLay's House fan-base maybe receeding. Remember how quickly Newt Gingrich fell from favor? I'm going to take the bold stand that Tom DeLay is destined to face the same fate. As far as I can tell, there's still no definitive answer on the question of whether the House Ethics committee will launch a formal investigation into DeLay's behavior but at least it's clear that they're finally ready to admit that his record isn't exactly kosher...
