Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday he twice offered his resignation to President George W. Bush over the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, but both times was asked to stay in the job.
I take away a couple of things from this revelation. First, our President didn't believe the events that occurred at Abu Gharaib amounted to a fireable offense. Second. the President - by allowing Donald Rumsfeld to retain his position despite a considerable display of incompetence - has made himself wholly responsible for any further acts of ineptitude by Mr. Rumsfeld.
