Hotlanta: A Summary

We're headed home. A few thoughts on Atlanta:

1. Restaurants in the downtown area are remarkably overpriced.

2. Taxi cab drivers do not run their meters but instead come up with a fee based on mileage when you arrive at your destination. This is a bit disconcerting.

3. The Atlanta Underground has gone downhill.

4. The Little Five Points area is awesome. The Euclid Ave Yacht Club is a great place to grab a beer, randomly run into people you know, and enjoy a top-notch mid-90s indie rock music collection. Sweet Lime has excellent food for cheap prices - so good that it makes up for the lousy service.

5. Actually, the service at most Atlanta restaurants is SLOW.

6. The local brew of choice, Sweetwater 420, is quite good. Their festive ale was also tasty. Stella Artois is very popular here as well - I don't recall seeing it on tap ever in Austin.

7. The Virginia Highlands area is fairly yuppie but fun. A few decent bars, lots of appealing restaurants. Shopping opportunities abound.

8. Atlanta is not easy to get around without a car. There were several museums I wanted to check out but getting around was just too time consuming.

9. The Jimmy Carter presidential library has lovelier grounds than the GHW Bush or LBJ libraries.

10. Atlanta is cuckoo for Kerry. Even out in the burbs, I didn't see a single GW bumper sticker and only a few yard signs.
