Ditto to What Jesse Says

I agree with Jesse:

When Law & Order deals with sensitive political issues in an election year, shouldn't the show mention at some point that one of the principal actors is a former Republican Senator who served in the Senate under the current inhabitants of the Oval Office? The show is making what amounts to a series of editorial comments on the war, Abu Ghraib, international politics...with no mention that, hey, one of the people on the show was a pretty powerful Senate Republican during the leadup to the war, who himself voted to give the President authority to go to war.
Beyond all of the political innuendo, both of the season openers just plain sucked. The new detective character is awful, the demand to suspend your disbelief and overlook major holes in the plot was too great, and the 9/11 exploitation left me feeling dirty (kinda like the GOP convention). Law and Order is one of my all-time favorites so I hope tonight's flops were just a fluke...

UPDATE: James Wolcott disagrees about Dennis Farina's new character but hits the nail on the head regarding Fred Thompson:

Fred Thompson is a pompous pork chop whose cliched Southern homilies wouldn't be listened to seriously for ten seconds in NY.
