I've been remiss in failing to mention that today is Women's Equality Day. U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, extending the right of suffrage to women.
In celebration of this anniversary, NOW is asking women and men (!) who support women's equality to sign a petition to remind candidates that women's issue are still as important today as they were 84 years ago:
A Message to Candidates for OfficePosted by sarah at August 26, 2004 3:26 PM | TrackBackAs a strong supporter of women's equal rights, I am asking you to take a leadership role in restoring and strengthening the many protections and guarantees in law and regulation that have advanced women's equality over the last 40 years.
These include passing strong pay equity legislation; repealing all laws and policies that have eroded women's reproductive rights; halting attacks on Title IX equal education amendments and improving implementation; safeguarding Social Security under current structure with improvements for single women; improving all health care programs including Medicaid and traditional Medicare, with a prescription drug benefit; expanding paid Family and Medical Leave; adopting humane welfare legislation with educational opportunities; fully funding child care assistance; reinstating overtime pay requirements; opposing all regressive judicial nominees; extending and fully funding the Violence Against Women Act, and addressing problems of women in the military.
