The Catholic Vote

Today's Salon has an interesting article on Catholic voting trends in the United States that concludes Catholics are slightly more likely to vote Democratic than the general population. I think this has interesting implications for Texas. A glance at demographic projections shows the potential for Latino voters to have a revolutionary impact on Texas politics in the next couple of decades. Many people feel that Latino voters, if mobilized, could even return Texas to a Democratic majority. Critics argue that Mexican American communities' strong ties to the Catholic church - and (presumed) interest in pro-life politics - make it more likely that many Tejanos will flock to the Republican Party. This article presents an interesting challenge to that idea. It's impossible to predict how demographic shifts will ultimately shift Texas' political environment but it certainly seems like there's a lot of potential for change...
