I subscribe to the George Bush re-election listserv to stay abreast of RNC activities. This local event caught my eye:
"An Insightful Look at the Bush White House From One of the People Who Knows the President Best - His Trusted Counselor Karen Hughes.
Karen Hughes will be traveling across the nation throughout April promoting her new book, Ten Minutes from Normal. She'll be visiting your area soon:
WHEN: Sunday, March 28
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM CT
WHERE: West Lake High School, Fine Arts Facility
(tallest, western-most building on the campus)
4100 Westbank Drive
Austin, TX 78746-6566
512-732-9290
This event is free and open to the public.
Karen Hughes has worked beside President George W. Bush since, as she says, "the motorcade was only one car and he was sometimes the one driving it." As counselor to the president, she brought the working mom's perspective to the White House, often asking of President Bush's policies, 'What does this mean for the average person?'"
I'd be curious to know how a Westlake resident purports to speak for the average American...Westlake is a wealthy suburb of Austin that pushes my buttons because it maintains its own school district in order to keep local wealth in the community rather than share it with less wealthy Austin Independent School District schools. Nothing original there but it, frankly, disgusts me when well-to-do middle class suburbanites imagine themselves as average. I grew up in planned communities like Westlake so I can only accept such "average joe" posturing as either naive or disingenuous... I don't intend to imply that Westlake residents are inherently selfish or bad people but I do think it's important to be honest that its residents have created an exclusive, privileged enclave for themselves that is hardly representative of the realities of most Americans lives. I'm open to arguments that Karen Hughes has some other life experiences that she brings to the table but buying into her as a champion for the average man is a bit of a challenge otherwise...
I can't make it Sunday but I'd love to hear from anyone that attends.
